You have looked at a chair in your home — or worse, someone else's — and felt something. A suspicion. A vibration. This is normal, and you are not alone: since the cuckstoel entered the international vocabulary, furniture worldwide has been living under a quiet cloud of doubt.
Science demands a procedure. The following five criteria constitute the current accepted standard for domestic identification. Administer them calmly. The chair can sense haste.
The five diagnostic criteria
-
The orientation test. Which way does the chair face? A working chair faces a desk, a table, or a television. A cuckstoel faces the room — the traffic, the conversation, the general business of others. It is not watching anything. It is watching everything.
-
The solitude clause. A cuckstoel is exactly one chair. Two chairs constitute a conversation set, four a dining arrangement, zero a lifestyle. One — alone, unpaired, unexplained — is the signature. Pay attention at parties: it is the chair people drag over, never the chair people sit in.
-
The respectful distance. Placement matters. A cuckstoel is near enough to observe the proceedings and far enough to participate in none of them. If the room had a witness stand, the chair would be standing in it.
-
The purposelessness audit. Ask the chair what it is for. A desk chair has a desk. A reading chair has a lamp and a bearing. The cuckstoel has a wall, an angle, and a past. If the honest answer is “it came with the room,” the criterion is met.
-
The permanent vacancy. Finally, occupancy. Who sits in it? Coats. Laptops. Once, briefly, a guest who was being spoken to. The cuckstoel is the most used piece of furniture in the home and the least sat upon. This paradox is diagnostic gold.
Reading your results
Zero or one criteria. An innocent chair. Apologize to it for the intrusion and speak of this never again.
Two or three criteria. A situational cuckstoel — dormant most of the year, activates during dinner parties and heart-to-hearts. Manageable with seasonal rotation.
Four or five criteria. A confirmed cuckstoel. Offer our condolences, then our congratulations: you own a cultural artifact, and it is doing precisely what it was born to do. The hotel variant of the species behaves identically in the wild.
